Chinafrika Conference at Goethe Institut, Johannesburg

Chinafrika is a two-day conference from 29-30 April 2017 at Goethe Institut, Johannesburg presented in partnership with MetroZones Berlin, The Confucius Institute and Museum of Contemporary Art Leipzig. The conference presents academic papers, artist’s presentations and group discussions focused on cultural responses to the relationship between the African continent and the People’s Republic of China, both historical and contemporary.

The conference is the result of more than three years of research and engagement with the subject by project artistic director Jochen Becker and is one of several similar events being held in April by research groups in Lubumbashi, Lagos and Guangzhou.

The conference will feature the launch of the publication Chinafrika Southern Africa edited by Michael MacGarry and produced by the Southern Africa Working Group, featuring contributions from Sammy Baloji, Samuel Fosso, Daniel Halter, William Kentridge, Juliette Leeb-du Toit, Richard Poplak, Ella
Raidal, Prof. Ruth Simbao, Moffat Takadiwa, Dr. Cobus van Staden and James Webb.

Admission is free and the programme begins at 10h00 Saturday 29 April with lunch and refreshments served.
